The Asian Championships to be held in KL at Selangor Polo Club 5th September have been run and won

10 teams competed for the holy grail of Asian Football, and in a repeat of last years final Dubai Heat proved too strong for Singapore Wombats.

Beaten semi-finalists were Hong Kong Dragons and Bali Geckos so the same four teams as last year made the semis.

In the Junior competition the result was also a repeat from last year with the Jakarta Bulldogs triumphing over the inexperienced Malaysian Warriors.

Mark Stennett (www.markstennett.com) , who has played for both Malaysian Warriors and Jakarta Bintangs took some outstanding photos. Check them out on his website. Some selections attached.

Full results uploaded along with Awards and Asian All star team. Individual Club reports on their respective performances at the Championships are filed under the relevant Club News below

The Jakarta Bintangs scored their first win in Bali in over 5 years comfortably defeating arch-rivals the Geckos by 7 goals on 15th August, 2009. This win will give the Bintangs a great deal of confidence leading up to the Asian Championships in 3 weeks time.

In a very tightly contested tribute footy match on 8th August, the Vietnam Swans got up over the Lao Elephants by just 4 points.

It was a special and moving match that was dedicated to the victims of the recent bombings in Jakarta.

Prior to the match, the Australian Ambassador, the Deputy Minister/Counsellor from the Indonesian Embassy, and a former player of the Jakarta Bintangs spoke. Then, all players and spectators observed a minute’s silence.

On 8th August, 2009 Malaysian Warriors U/18 side defeated the Australian International School in the first competitive Under Age game ever played in Malaysia between local indigenous teams.

On 27 June the Jakarta Bintangs thrashed the Philippine Eagles 22.11.143 to 1.3.9 in a mismatch in Manila. No wonder the Philippines are not sending a side to the Asian Championships.

On the same day the Thailand Tigers enjoyed a narrow win over the Singapore Wombats in Pattaya.

On 15th June AFL Indonesia held the Allan Taylor Cup for Indonesian Juniors. This momentous event sees Indonesian football formally recognised by the Australian Government and the AFL. Whilst junior football has been around for some time in Indonesia, a critical mass has now been reached and we can look forward to rapid development of the game at grass roots level. The Bintangs, the Geckos and all those who have worked for this over many years from the days of Rob Baldwin and Andi Muhammed through to Tim Hakfoort, Chris Bandy and many others should feel mighty proud. On the same day the Jakarta Bintangs overran a depleted Geckos side who were playing their third game in as many weeks.

Junior Football

U18s_August_8_2.jpg

The future of Australian Football in Asia lies in the development of Junior Football at Under Age and Auskick levels. Giant strides have been taken in the past two years with most clubs having active Auskick programmes, and Indonesia , Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia starting Under Age programmes.
The most significant event has been the establishment of AFL Indonesia and it hoped that in the near future that will translate into AFL South East Asia which will give the fledgling teams opportunities to play each other and hence give meaningful competition and opportunities to promote and grow the game

Auskick

AUSKICK_poster_2009.jpg

Auskick is a programme for 8-12 years age group, both boys and girls, designed to introduce them to the fun and skills of the game. The rules are modified to prevent hard tackling and the focus is on developing co-ordination and ball handling skills. Most clubs have an active Auskick programme generally running from March to September each year. Visit the relevant websites for details.
