Played using a 9-a-side format at the Canggu Club in Bali for the over-35s, this year saw the fifth edition of the tournament with 11 teams from Australia and Asia taking part. The tournament saw a replay of the 2008 final with the same result, the Darwin Waratahs defeating the Bali Geckoes. Kainey Cup

dave_kainey.jpg

Played between Vietnam Swans and Jakarta Bintangs

It is a measure of the respect for Dave “Flyer” Kainey that both the Bintangs and the Swans have wanted the Cup named after him.

Dave started off his Asian Footy career with the Bintangs and was formally voted by them as a “Club Legend”. He had a major role in introducing and developing Auskick into the country which has now had 10,000 go through its program. In 2003, Dave moved to Hanoi and was a lead organizer in shifting Aussie Rules from the couch and onto the paddock.

Since moving to Singapore in 2005, Dave has remained actively involved with both Clubs. For example, most recently he played for the Swans in their ANZAC Day match against Thailand in Kanchanaburi last month, he attends the Asian Champs with either (both) teams and he attends the Jakarta Bintangs AFL Grand Final Event. He even attends the Swans Annual Golf Classic in Melbourne on the 4th Day of the Boxing Day Test Match.

Changi Cup

ANZAC_Day_2009-191.jpg

The Changi Cup is a hotly contested annual series between Singapore and Malaysia. First contested in 1994 between the Malaysian Tigers (now the Warriors) and Singapore Wombats, the Cup has remained with Singapore every year except 2007, Singapore regaining the Cup last year. This year to coincide with Anzac Day a tri-nations tournament was held involving Singapore, Malaysia and the Australian Army.
Singapore proved triumphant in a great day of football.

Anyone who has ever attended knows this is an occassion to be treasured. This year was the turn of the Vietnan Swans. The Tigers have a proud record in these games and made short work of the Swans

Bali9s

bali_geckos_w400.jpg

The Bali9s is one of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in Asia. Hosted by the Bali Geckos its most poignant edition was 2003, the year after the Bali bombings. On that day, Bateman's Bay won the Cup, the occasion being graced by the then Prime Minister of Australia John Howard, but more importantly for football followers, Ron Barassi, Dermot Brereton and Mick Martin were in the stands , and Jason McCartney played for the Geckos. The final was actually televised in Perth. Sadly, the event has lost some lustre since, and last year saw the four Indonesian sides, the Bali Geckos, Timor Leste Crocs, Borneo Bears and Jakarta Bintangs compete, with Bali winning the final
